Until now, every Polaris model shared a common 42mm case diameter. That changes with the introduction of the new Polaris Date 40mm, marking the first time Jaeger-LeCoultre has downsized the collection. The more compact case brings greater versatility and wearability while retaining the sporty character and refined aesthetics that define the Polaris family.

The reduction from 42mm to 40mm is a significant and welcome evolution for the Polaris collection. For many enthusiasts, a 42mm case can be an immediate barrier, regardless of the watch’s actual wrist presence. Over the past few years, collector preferences have steadily shifted toward more restrained proportions, influenced in part by the renewed popularity of vintage-inspired watches. As a result, case sizes in the 36mm to 39mm range have become increasingly desirable, making the new 40mm Polaris Date a far more compelling option for a broader audience. The smaller footprint enhances both comfort and versatility, allowing the watch to transition more effortlessly between casual and refined settings.

The redesign extends beyond diameter alone. Jaeger-LeCoultre has also slimmed the case profile, reducing thickness from 13.92mm to 12.9mm. While case diameter is easy to appreciate on paper, thickness is often the dimension that most influences how a watch feels on the wrist. A well-balanced watch depends on harmonious proportions between diameter, thickness, and overall design intent. For a contemporary sports watch, keeping the profile under 13mm is a thoughtful decision, improving wearability while preserving the robust character expected of the Polaris. The dial remains unmistakably Polaris, preserving the collection’s distinctive layered architecture and signature double fumé gradient effect. At its centre sits a richly textured lacquered blue disk, framed by the minute track and an outer hour ring that enhances both depth and legibility. The internal rotating bezel, a hallmark of the Polaris line, is retained and operated via the upper crown, reinforcing the watch’s sporty, adventure-ready character.

Finished in a darker anthracite tone, the rotor provides a striking contrast against the movement’s refined finishing, creating an attractive view for enthusiasts who appreciate mechanical artistry.

Interestingly, Jaeger-LeCoultre has taken a refreshingly straightforward approach to pricing with the new Polaris Date 40mm. Despite sharing the same in-house movement, overall design language, and high level of finishing as its larger sibling, the more compact model comes in at approximately SGD 16,200, compared with around SGD 19,600 for the 42mm version featuring the same blue fumé lacquer dial.

That represents a difference of roughly SGD 3,400, despite the watches being separated by just 2mm in case diameter. Part of the pricing distinction may be attributed to the strap choice, as the 40mm model is delivered on a textured canvas strap rather than the rubber strap fitted to the 42mm edition. However, the cost difference between canvas and rubber alone is unlikely to account for the entire gap.

Ultimately, the Polaris Date 40mm offers a compelling value proposition within the collection. By combining more versatile dimensions, improved wearability, and a more accessible entry point, Jaeger-LeCoultre has made its most adaptable sports watch even more appealing.
